1. Before finding us, what was your struggle? What were your biggest frustrations?
My biggest struggle was …drive…. I lacked motivation. I felt as if all I did was get up, go to work, come home, and go to bed. I lacked self confidence and honestly I was a little ashamed of who I had become. I was slow, out of shape, and extremely unhappy about my appearance and attitude. The frustrations built and built; I knew I was better than that. I was so down on myself.
People could notice how big I was getting and some of them made comments. That was tough for me, I’ve never been a big guy, but eating unhealthy and drinking took its toll. I decided something had to change.
So one night while reading through a magazine I came across an ad for an obstacle course race. I remember thinking, “That looks like fun. I need to do this!” I read a little further but I kept seeing the image from that page. I walked over to my wife and said, “What do you think about doing something like this?” She scanned the page and her reply was just what I wanted to hear. “We could totally do that!” That was the start of this incredible journey. Day in and day out we trained. We changed everything. We changed how we ate and how we lived. We started a daily routine. We walked, jogged, and ran … A LOT! By mid summer the race was rapidly approaching. Inside I was freaking out. I’ve never done competitive type stuff with running.
As I was scrolling through social media one evening, I noticed a post from a guy doing CrossFit out of his garage. I asked my wife again… “what do you think about this?” I expected an answer like “not a chance!” Or, “we are too old!” Something along those lines. Instead she said “let’s give it a shot.” So I messaged Coach Matt. I was nervous to get a reply! I remember Matt was working and it seemed like an eternity before this guy replied!!! When he replied he was very excited and very motivating right off the bat. We set a time to go give it a shot and I remember the drive to his house. It took literally 5 minutes to get to their house. It seemed like an hour. I had butterflies in my stomach and I wanted to throw up.
Walking up to the gym however, that all changed.Matt came out introduced himself to us and explained the workout. Other athletes were already there starting to stretch and prep for the workout. I expected to feel like an outcast being new to this, but no. From the very first day, I felt like we were part of gym, like we belonged here. We didn’t just join a gym, we joined a family. A family that I can honestly say I don’t know where I’d be without them! So to my CrossFit family, all I can say is THANK YOU!! I love all of you guys!
3. How did our program help you?
CrossFit Final Call has helped in more ways than words can truly explain! The CrossFit program, for me, changed everything. From the first conversation Matt and I had to present day, I’ve felt like this is meant for me. The CrossFit program taught me you do not have to run mile after mile to get fit. You can actually go to this gym and have fun doing workouts. No odd looks, no one starring, we are all here for the same reason and all here for each other! I have connected and made friends with people I would have nevergaragegymdays.jpg met if not for CrossFit Final Call. This program not only helped me, it changed me! I’m not afraid to step out of my comfort zone any more. At first I was and that was ok! I wasn’t alone, no one feels safe outside their comfort zone, but with the trust and faith I have in the coaching staff I know I’ll be just fine!! This gym is amazing. I can’t think of any other place or gym I’d rather be a part of than CrossFit Final Call!
4. How is life different for you now?
Life now is night and day different. I am so much happier with the reflection I see in the mirror. My desire is back. I have the drive to keep going, to keep pushing. I push every day to better myself both in and out of the gym – both physically and mezach3ntally. The results are showing on both parts! I also find myself helping others more and more each day! Whether it’s rooting athletes on during the workouts or giving advice or guidance to athletes about particular movements or positions. I love going into the gym now. No matter what kind of day you have had you’re always guaranteed to smile, laugh, cry, and sweat your butt off in this gym. When the workout is over, after all that, the feeling of satisfaction and badassery makes you forget about what you just went through! That and countless other reasons keep me going back! I love doing CrossFit and I truly love this gym. Crossfit Final Call is home.
