I started CrossFit about 7 years ago because a close friend of mine talked me into trying a workout. At the time I was a runner and hadn’t touched any sort of weights since high school sports. My friend was a personal trainer and had moved to Florida. He got a job at a CrossFit gym in Orlando. He came home to visit around Thanksgiving one year and told me all about CrossFit. He begged me to do this thing called a WOD (Workout Of the Day) with him. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but fell in love with CrossFit from the moment I completed my first workout.
My first impression was that CrossFit was tough. I didn’t know all the movements and it was intimidating. But, I was struggling with some PTSD issues at the time and noticed that after I did a workout I felt much better. It became a way for me to deal with frustration and anger without taking it out on anyone else. CrossFit helped me find peace and purpose in my life.
When I started there weren’t many people in the area doing this type of fitness. My only coach was YouTube and mistakes. I did manage to find a small group of guys who were doing CrossFit workouts in the back of the Depot, and luckily they took me in and showed me the ropes. We’ve lowered that barrier to entry now, and anyone can start CrossFit no matter what their current fitness looks like. At CFFC there’s always a coach to guide you through the workout and help you figure out what works best for you.
My first bright spot was when I got my first bar muscle up. I can remember working on getting that muscle up almost every single day for months until I got it. When I finally got on top of that pull-up bar I felt like I was on top of the world!
Now I’m working on virtuosity. I want to be able to do the common uncommonly well. This is for both my coaching, and my own movement.
My most favorite memory at CFFC was the 2017 CrossFit Open. We held an intramural competition that turned out to be one of the best community building events that I’ve ever been to. It was absolutely amazing to watch my athletes accomplish things they didn’t think they were capable of doing and encouraging one another for 5 weeks.
I have been a vivid exerciser since middle school. I was what you might call a “cardio queen”. My husband started CrossFit long before me, 7 years to be exact. And after 7 years of him bugging me, and nagging running injuries I decided to try it out.
The First time I tried CrossFit I loved it. That first 10 minute WOD killed me more than a 10 mile run! I still love it. I love it so much I have practically given up running (I was a marathon runner). I like lifting now, which I never thought I would. I was always afraid to get bulky, but guess what that never happened!
Oh goodness, there have been a lot of bright spots. Being able to do my first strict pull-up, which I worked on for over a year was definitely a highlight for me! More than that, I have bright spots daily but they don’t revolve around me, they revolve around our members making gains and progress in health and nutrition.
Now I’m working on Olympic lifts and getting stronger. I know that none of those skills I want to happen like muscle ups can without the strength aspect.
My favorite CFFC memory is the Wod for Ayden. It was amazing seeing everyone come together for such a good cause!
